Artificial intelligence (AI) (and anti-corruption)

Article in  Elgar Encyclopedia of Corruption and Society (pp. 17-22). Edward Elgar Publishing.

Description: Corruption is a complex and multifaceted problem, as is digital transformation. Big data paired with powerful, increasingly intelligent algorithms can be (ab)used to influence opinions. This entry examines the challenges and the potential of artificial intelligence (AI) as an anti-corruption tool. We show how AI can be a valuable tool for analyzing data, running simulations, and even autonomously executing decisions such as stopping transactions. Yet, whether this implementation brings societal benefits depends strongly on whether it is human-centered, upholding democratic values. Taking a current example where citizens play active roles within politics, we discuss how technology and AI can help make this process more efficient and possibly even more participatory.
